Quick Start Guide

How to Use the Knitting Chart Maker

1

Set Grid

Enter columns and rows in Grid Settings above. Cells auto-scale — the page never expands no matter how large you go.

2

Enter Gauge

Enter your stitch and row counts per 4 inches. Cells adjust their aspect ratio to match real knitted fabric proportions.

3

Image to Chart

Upload any photo above. Choose color count, enable dithering, then click Convert to get an editable colorwork chart instantly.

4

Draw

Pick Symbol or Color mode on the left. Select a stitch or color, then Pen, Fill, or Eraser. Click and drag across cells.

5

Knitting Mode

Click Knitting Mode in the toolbar. The chart dims, one row highlights at a time from bottom to top. Use Prev/Next Row to follow along as you knit.

6

Download

Click Download PNG. Your chart saves with row numbers, legend, and repeat bracket. No watermarks, ever.

Tips: Ctrl+Z = Undo · Ctrl+Y = Redo · Mirror flips the chart horizontally · Pick tool samples any existing color or symbol · Knitting Mode shows RS/WS direction automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Knitting Chart Maker FAQ

Is the Gauge Genie knitting chart maker really free?
Yes — 100% free with no hidden catches. There is no subscription, no account required, and no watermarks on downloaded charts. Every feature — including the Image to Chart converter, all 25+ stitch symbols, gauge settings, knitting mode, zoom, and PNG export — is available at zero cost. We believe professional knitting tools should be accessible to everyone.
What is Knitting Mode and how do I use it?
Knitting Mode is a row-by-row reading guide built into the chart. When you click Knitting Mode in the toolbar, the entire chart dims slightly and one row lights up with an orange highlight — starting from the bottom row (Row 1) and working upward, which mirrors the direction you actually knit. Use the Next Row button to advance after finishing each row, and Prev Row to go back if you make a mistake. Odd-numbered rows are labelled RS (right side — knit direction), and even-numbered rows are WS (wrong side — purl direction). Click Exit or press the Knitting Mode button again to return to normal editing.
How does the Image to Chart converter work?
The Image to Chart feature converts any photo or illustration into a colorwork knitting chart in seconds. Here’s how it works: upload a JPG, PNG, GIF, or WEBP image using the panel above the canvas. Choose how many colors you want (between 2 and 20) — fewer colors give a bold graphic look, more colors preserve detail. The tool uses k-means clustering to automatically select the best palette from your image, then maps every stitch cell to the nearest color. Enable Dithering (Floyd–Steinberg algorithm) for smoother color gradients and more photorealistic results. Once converted, every cell is fully editable — you can touch up individual stitches, swap colors, or add symbols on top of the colorwork.
What is a gauge-accurate grid and why does it matter?
Most knitting chart tools use a perfectly square grid, which is visually misleading. Knitted stitches are naturally wider than they are tall — a typical gauge might be 22 stitches but only 30 rows per 4 inches, meaning each stitch cell is wider than it is tall. When you design on a square grid, motifs appear taller and narrower on screen than they actually knit up in real yarn. The Gauge Genie chart maker adjusts each cell’s width-to-height ratio to match your exact gauge, so what you see on screen accurately reflects the finished knitted fabric. Enter your stitch count and row count per 4 inches in the Gauge panel and click Apply — the cells will reshape automatically.
How do zoom in and zoom out work?
Use the and + buttons in the toolbar to zoom out and zoom in on the chart. The percentage display shows your current zoom level. At 100% (the default), cells auto-scale to fill the canvas perfectly — the entire chart is always visible with no page expansion. When you zoom in above 100%, cells get larger and the canvas becomes scrollable so you can work on fine details in large charts. Click the compress icon to instantly reset to 100% auto-fit. You can also use keyboard shortcuts: press + to zoom in and to zoom out at any time.
What stitch symbols are available?
The chart maker includes 25 industry-standard knitting symbols: Knit, Purl, Yarn Over (YO), K2tog, SSK, P2tog, SSP, CDD (central double decrease), K1tbl, P1tbl (through back loop), Sl1wyib, Sl1wyif (slip stitches), KFB, M1L, M1R (increases), Bobble, No Stitch, Drop Stitch, Nupp, and six cable symbols: C2F, C2B, C4F, C4B, C6F, C6B. All symbols are drawn to match standard knitting chart conventions. You can combine symbols with color fills for mixed-technique charts.
How large can my knitting chart be?
Charts can be up to 100 columns (stitches) wide and 80 rows tall. That’s large enough for full Fair Isle yoke patterns, complete lace repeats, wide cable panels, or detailed colorwork motifs. No matter how large you make the grid, cells automatically scale to fit your screen — the page never expands and you never get unwanted horizontal scrolling. Use the zoom feature if you need to work on fine details in a large chart.
How do I download my knitting chart as a PNG?
Click the orange Download PNG button in the toolbar at any time. The downloaded file is a high-resolution PNG (2× resolution for crisp printing) and includes your full chart grid, row numbers on both sides, column numbers at the top, a repeat bracket if you have set one, and an auto-generated key listing all symbols and colors used. There are no watermarks, no Gauge Genie branding overlaid on the chart itself, and no download limits. The chart is yours to print, share, or embed in any knitting pattern.
Can I make colorwork charts without uploading an image?
Yes. Click Color Mode in the left panel to switch to colorwork. You’ll see a palette of 20 curated colors plus a custom color picker for any hex color you need. Use the Pen tool to paint individual cells, the Fill tool to flood-fill regions, or the Pick (eyedropper) tool to sample an existing color from the chart. You can combine Color Mode and Symbol Mode — for example, painting a colorwork background and adding lace symbols on top. The chart legend updates automatically to list every color used.
Can I use downloaded charts in published knitting patterns?
Yes, absolutely. Any chart you create using Gauge Genie is yours to use however you like — in free patterns, paid patterns on Ravelry, Etsy, Payhip, LoveCrafts, or anywhere else. No attribution to Gauge Genie is required, though it is always appreciated. We do not retain any rights to charts created with our tool.
Does the knitting chart maker work on mobile and tablet?
Yes — the tool is fully touch-enabled on iOS and Android. Drawing, erasing, filling, and zooming all work with touch gestures. For detailed work on large charts, a tablet or desktop gives the most comfortable workspace, but the tool is fully functional on any screen size. Nothing to install — just open the page in any modern browser.
